I dunno if you have to BUY a gown for university graduation...

And I need the name of your college to see the ring designs, Kyu. :B

@Elec: that actually sounds pretty cool. :P

University of Tennessee, but it shouldn't make a difference. XD I'm sure they're all the same.

It's like : "Pay 200 bucks for this beautiful colored glass bead set in shiny gold plated aluminum!!!"
Yeah. SO not happening for me... ::hora::
^ Are the rings really like that? The reason they are so expensive (well I guess in this catalog XD) is because the stones are real and the gold...is gold XD Or so they say~

@ Elec: Wow, you're lucky then ::squee:: We can put symbols on ours too, but none have really caught my eye yet.

@PureElegance: Yeah, they were really overpriced. Your school is probably using a better catalog. The ones in my catalog were all "synthetic". ::bleh::
And people still bought them!
Also this was for high school. College rings are usually nicer.

^ Our high school used real gold/white gold/silver if you wanted it and real gemstones and stuff if you wanted. It was all up to what your preferences are.

I went through the 'make your own ring' thing on the herf jones site, and for my class ring for college and to have it be white gold with all the engravings and stuffs it said it was $516 roughly, which, I think, isn't so bad. It's probably a good idea to shop around, though, regardless. XD

::ash:: Back when I was in high school, gold was $250 an ounce! If I had bought a gold class ring then, I could melt it down now and make a fortune!
... just like my parents did

Anyway, I think class rings are silly because no one will even have heard of your high school once you go off to college, and people in college who still take high school seriously were regarded as losers, at least in my experience. (and Kyu, I never saw anyone wear a high school letter jacket XDDD) Same goes with college, but to a lesser extent.

I've seen it, but it's not like rampant or anything. Generally people who are in sports at the school who did the same sport in high school or something. I'd never wear my band letterman jacket around my college. :P

But you see t-shirts and the like from peoples' high schools all the time being worn. XD

I voted for didn't get one (from high school) and I have many reasons.

First, they were really expensive! The gold one was for $500, the fake platinum was $659, and the white gold was $600. The other reason was that my school gave the news about the rings in a very short notice and we only had a week to make a deposit and since I was poor I was like screw it. Instead of that ring, I preferred a cubic zirconia ring that I wear since my middle school graduation and I still wear it ::meev:: . Over here there weren't choices of adding designs or gemstones, it was the school logo ::zetsubou:: .

About the caps and gowns, that was a problem as well, I payed $100 for something that I would wear for about 5 hour and then keep it in a closet collecting dust.

I might get one for college, but I have absolutely no pride in my school and I doubt I'll have one in my college either. I don't find my place of education that important, and I certainly don't define myself by it... so I'm just not thinkin I'll ever get a class ring.

Edit: I'd rather spend my money on a Moitie ring anyway ::kisaki::... (that rose and thorns one was so cool! ::zetsubou::)

The only reason to get a letterman jacket was... for the letter, if you did anything for which you would get one. Or all the other badges/patches you'd get if you weren't a hermit.

I actually had a crazy amount of patches for various competitions/activities I'd done and I earned a letter as well, but I never got the jacket. Just wasn't my style, it wasn't about irrational jock-hate or anything.

If I were you I wouldn't buy any jewelry from Japan. I've never seen any that looks like it has quality workmanship or materials - not even Moitie. Not to mention that you'll pay way more than you would for an equivalent American-made item. For the price of a silver Japanese ring you could get a better domestic one in gold.

^ Yeppers. I was in the market for various new earrings and I couldn't believe the prices. But then again Harajuku is trying to steal your money no matter what. I've found much cooler, much cheaper jewelry online and been very happy.

I have to stock up when I go back to America. For... reasons.

I dislike the idea of school spirit. Especially in high school, I wanted nothing to do with the "community" there... (very snobby community; I was sneered at because I could not afford my own car.) I'd never wear anything that represented my school.

So, that and the fact I do not wear rings... no way. It was never even a consideration. Those things are expensive as hell anyway. Waste o' money.

^ I'm sorry it was like that for you, Navate. :/

More and more since I've been in college I've learned how awesome and out of place my high school really is. We had 1400 kids who went there, so we didn't have any popular groups- half the population was either mildly goth or hung out with those who were mildly goth (I was in the latter category), and so there was a pretty even balance of 'power', I guess you could say, in the universal school ego we all were apart of. Unless you were a creepy psychopath, you weren't picked on- everyone had at least one friend, and we didn't have bullies. The school as a whole had zero school spirit, so no one had to worry about that (when we got a new principal, he even yelled at all of us at a pep rally because no one was participating in the 'loudest grade wins the spirit stick' competition they always do- heck, often times classes would consciously boycot it for various reasons caused by discontent with the school admin). Since being in college, I've been really surprised to hear story of how people were really pressured or picked on terribly in high school, or how their school was dominated by really terrible groups. I feel lucky to end up where I did, even if we all shared a really dark humor that pretty much kept the peace among us.

I guess we were pretty unique. It was such a turn from middle school for me where life was really hellish. High school was such freedom and anonymity. @_@ I miss it... ^^;

My high school experience was less than thrilling for me, so I didn't really want a ring. Instead, my parents purchased an iPod mini for me, which was the same price. I really liked this because I still get tons of use out of it even today, about 3 years later. I'm not much of a ring person so I doubt I would have worn it much at all.

For college, well I graduated a 1-year program already but never bothered with anything special. After my current 4-year Illustration degree program I'm not sure if I'll buy a ring or not, I haven't decided.

I'd never heard of class rings till I read this either ^^
In high school, we don't even have jackets here, and there's no graduation ceremony. We have a ball but it's pretty low-key and I didn't enjoy it all that much. We've only just started having a yearbook and only for the last year of school.
In university we have the cap&gown graduation tho. And anyone can buy hoodies with "University of East Anglia" on them and if you're in any societies, with that on the jacket too, like I have one with LITSOC (Literary society) on.

I never heard of it before this thread either :p

I would never buy one from high school... But if the school I go to now offered it, I'd probably get one, because I love my school, and I love jewelry x3
We have school shirts instead or class shirts or jackets. I have those from all the schools I've went to but I never wear them, and they'll probably get thrown away anyway. A ring would be nicer since.. I have a special fondness for rings and they take much less space if you want to save them x)

Edit: After reading the prices... I would only get it if my parents paid for me. ::gaku::

AHH! I was talking to my friends in the car, and they were like "But if we don't get the rings, we won't be in the Ring Ceremony ::weepy:: " I guess that's why some people want it...its supposed to be a nice ceremony and all, but I don't think I'd get it just for that :P I dont know XD

I'd rather have the money be put to use to get something that I "OMG!" really want ::kisaki:: And we're only going to wear it for how many years? Two? XD Then never again ::gaku::

Considering 80% of the forums has voted that the have not or will not buy one, I think it's safe to say we house a lot of atypical people (which is awesome!). Where I live, at least 80% of the students actually get a ring and a lot of the others wish they could.
If I were you I wouldn't buy any jewelry from Japan. I've never seen any that looks like it has quality workmanship or materials - not even Moitie.
But no jewelers in the western hemisphere would dare to make rings as garish as Moitié does ::meev::
