Thank you for the translation Rizumu, it was much appreciated! Mana said some very interesting things in this interview, particularly about breaking down stereotypes. I wonder if that refers to stereotypes about visual kei bands, or stereotypes about men who wore dresses for most of their career :)

Thanks so much for the translation, Rizumu. :D Lots of interesting things were discussed.

I think it might have something to do with what he said about lives. He doesn't want to listen to the music, he wants to play it for the fans and watch them react to it.

Actualy VK is not a genre of music, it can be any kind of music as long as you have a visual and is part of the scene.

I think that mana's project can be considered gothic or Vk, because it has music that has many elements from gothic music (and other music as well) and because he is part of the vk scene. Please, don't kill me if you think mana is gothic, i am only expressing what i think. :| And i don't really see the connection between having older fans means that you are not part of VK scene. so, all old fans of Kisaki , Lareine, Fatima do not count ? Lareine is not VK? Phantasmagoria is not VK? I don't think so. :|

thanks again, rizumu.

Actually it's a very broad genre of music that can filter down into many smaller different kinds (like you can't compare Despair's Ray and Psycho le Cemu AT ALL but they're both visual kei). Just like Rock music genre, there are many smaller different kinds of rock music (Try comparing Marilyn Manson with Gwen Stefani sorry for the bad example but I don't really listen to American music) Plus in Japan I've seen visual kei sections in record stores, not VK bands randomly spread throughout the other genres.

That's the thing, I don't think Moi dix Mois is gothic OR VK, but they definitely have elements of both. But like I read in Asten magazine they commented that Mana's music was really unique and unmatched by anyone, so it's really hard to classify it
(this is all mainly so I have a genre to file it under on my Mp3 player  )

Yes, VK has many bands with different kinds of music and styles, but , in my opinion , this does not mean it can qualify as a "music genre" like rock, jazz, samba, hip-hop or whatever. Because what vk bands have in common are their visuals (fashion), not their music -- and by this i don't mean all vk bands have same visuals, but that they are special among other "normal" bands because of their looks.

i wouldn't take their sections too seriously. They can even throw everything inside jpop section anyway.

I love the part about how he writes music for himself. Thats how I've always written music too... I really can't see myself NOT writing songs for me. That'd just be weird.

I've actually never thought about that... that people sometimes DON'T write songs to suit themselves. I find that odd... how do you write about something that doesn't interest you, or that you've never experianced?

Anyway. I've been paitently waiting for nine years (this June!) to finally see Mana in concert. I must say, my paitence is running thin, he better get to America quick. That, or someone's getting me tickets back to Japan.

Thank you for the rest of the interview, rizumu!

Mana seems so forthcoming these days, it makes me happy to know that he's excited and wants to share his thoughts with us. I'm also glad to hear he would like to see more guys at his shows. We boys should be proud Moi dix Mois fans ;)

I agree. When I write, it's always very selfish. I don't have an audience in mind. But I think it's that sort of work - any sort of art that's maybe obscure or nichey but also very heartfelt and passionate - that has the biggest impact. Many people might not like it but, when it does resonate with someone, it does so in a big, big way.

I've been following Mana for almost as long but I still have some patience to spare.. although I am getting a little jealous that Europe is so much more open to working with Mana to make concerts happen. It will happen someday though, I'm optimistic.

Yeah, well, I'm a very very very impaitent person to begin with. I'm actually quite pleased with myself that I haven't started writing angry fanmail. hahaha. Not that I would send it, but writing it out would at least relieve some stress. Mana doesn't need to know there are freaks like me waiting for him. Definatly not.

Ah! Thankyou SO much for that translation!! ^^ *bow* We all owe you!

... do you think Mana would ever get his well-shaped behind to Australia? The goth scene here already love him... and the majority of them only have 1-3 M10M tracks, but I asked around recently and they all said they'd pay to see Mana live... That's just in my city though. ^^
