I voted 'the states' but I really say 'the united states' or 'the US' :|
People who say 'America' need a reality check.

There's two whole continents that go by America. If you say America I'll assume you mean all of south & north America.

The United States. If you add that option to the poll I'll vote for it.

QFT. This is why I'd pick "The United States".

"What's directly South of Canada?"
The States.

"Where do you live?"
The United States.

"Name an ally of the UK."
The U.S.

"What's The Land of the Free, Home of the Brave?"
America.

It all depends on context to me. Most of the time I call it The United States or the U.S. though. "America" is usually reserved for poetic or rhetorical things, I think.

Honestly, the people who think this way need a reality check. No one's trying to say the United States are "the only America" or some other bullshit--it's just a shortened form of our country's full name and there's nothing wrong with that. If Central and South Americans want to get in a tizzy over how we call ourselves Americans instead of United Statesians and other ridiculous BS, then more power to them because I'm never going to accept this nonsense that it's wrong to call our country "America" or its inhabitants "Americans".

I'm opposed to saying "The United States" because there are precisely two countries that could refer to: the United States of America or the Estados Unidos Mexicanos, both of which are worthy and unique countries with rich cultural heritages.

But actually the Estados Unidos Mexicanos have another valid and just as important name: Mexico. And "United States of America" is just said as "America" just to shorten the oration and not say the entire name "United States of America".
Also their official nationality is ennounced as "american". And, as Amatsu said, America is about all the continent, so all of the people who live in North, Central and South America are americans, because that's the name of the entire continent.
btw, to joke around with some friends, sometimes I refer to the people from the United States as "Unitedstatians" lol. But being serious, in my personal opinion, I don't like to call "americans" to the people who is from the United States of America, I call them "gringos" (not in a discriminatory way) or I prefer to say "people from the United States" because of what I said before about the entire continent.
Usually I use "people from the United States" in most of the situations.

EDIT: I didn't read the last thing Berserk said. Sorry.
About that, it depends of the person. I respect their way of thinking but I have mine :)

People from the USA are referred to as "Americans", and "America" is actually part of the name of our country. North and South America are continents, therefore if you're from, say, Brazil, you'd probably say "I'm Brazilian" rather than "I'm South American". I'd imagine most people identify with their country moreso than their continent.
tl;dr I think saying "America" is okay.
Also if someone called me a gringo irl I'd punch them in the face.

aaand after typing all this I just notice that berserk beat me to it. xD

The thing about that is: America is right in the name. It's just the same as calling it "the States" "United States" "US."

lol same here. Actually to call someone a "gringo" is not an offensive way of calling them.
Now if you call them "f***ing gringo" that's another topic.

Yeah but it's "of America"

If it was "The United States Of Earth" we wouldn't call it 'Earth'. ::meev::

that fact that "of" is in there is irrelevant. America is still an abbreviation of United States of America.

^ Nope. That's USA, an abbreviation (actually it's an acronym, but whatever). An abbreviation is a really different thing. Like "Un. St. of Am." lol.

Agree with Amatsu.
