I guess I just don't understand musicals. Like, why exactly are we singing right now? Is this really necessary? It's so ridiculous that people just start singing and dancing for no reason whatsoever.

LOL, that's exactly what I think whenever I see a High School Musical commercial come on :|

But I like the older ones...because I like their stories more than the ones coming out now. I guess I have more 'respect' for them XD

THIS. RIGHT HERE.

That's my thought everytime musicals are brought up/advertised/I have the unfortunate opportunity of being in the same room as one being watched. They're just too ridiculous to sit through. It really does hurt my brain XD

I make an exception for the Buffy musical due to it's epic AWESOMENESS, and The Wizard of Oz because it's a favourite movie from my childhood and I like the story (and it's set in a weird fantasy magical world so the singing and dancing etc doesn't really seem too out of place :p). I also really like 'The Bitter Suite' Xena musical ep, as I'm obviously not right in the head. But other than that, musicals are a big fat NO.

I LOVE me some musicals, like seriously...I can't get enough of them. The only shows that I can't really get into are the Rogers and Hammerstein ones...ugh, borefest.

@Amatsu
RENT actually did a lot for AIDS, homelessness and all that. And yeah, those topics are something to be singing and dancing about because well, people listen more if you sing and dance. It raised awareness in places where people really didn't have any...

Sad things don't always have to be sad. ;)

And just because I can, here's a list of my favourites:

Rent
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Wicked
The Producers
Cats
Gypsy
The Lion King

It's hard to choose, but I'd say those are my top whatever...

I love me some musicals. Love love love love looooove. The only musical that I really don't like is... Rent. But that's a long story.

Favourites:

The Lion King
Les Miserables
Wicked
Avenue Q
Evil Dead: The Musical
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Once More, With Feeling
Hairspray

Also various other Disney musical movies from their 1990's renaissance, because I'm a total sucker for them. I also really like Moulin Rouge, but I tend to differentiate between stage musicals and movie musicals. :B

No one here loves the phantom of the opera?

That aside, I love cabaret & les miserables as well.

I love Phantom too, but it's not on my top 10 list. I'm getting my tickets for it this coming weekend, so that should be fun. :D

Le Mis was awesome too. I still have hopes that one day I can play Fantine. :) I never really liked Cabaret, dunno why, it just doesn't interest me. Chicago was awesome, though.

Another not-so-secret fantasy of mine is to play Billy Flynn.

I love musicals and if I had the money or if someone invited me I gladly would go to see some more often xD.
The only one I've seen live recently was Wicked, the German version.

Phantom of the Opera, German version once again, is among my favourites since childhood, as it has a very classical touch and I love the operatic style very much.
The main reason for my love towards musicals would be my love for singing the songs myself (quality not guaranteed ) and my amazement every time I hear skilled voices that move me to become better myself.

Just one question: What are theatre kids, and why are they being disliked? Those who participate in theatre/musicals (amateurs/pros)?

I tend to like musicals a lot. In fact, the only one I can think of that I've seen that I didn't like was one that my grandmother forced me to go to that was about people on a boat. I can't remember more than that.

My favorites are:
Cats
Phantom of the Opera
Les Miserables
Starlight Express

And it's no surprise, looking back at my favorite musicals, why I enjoy the visual aspect of the music I listen to now. XD

I don't hate musicals, but I'm definitely not a fan of them either. The fact that I don't have good experiences related to them doesn't help..

[slice of life]
Two years ago, at school, I had a "Musical theater" class. It could have been nice, if they hadn't forced us to do the play Little Shop of Horrors, if we weren't a group of about 18 students (mostly neither very talented nor motivated) and if there were more than 4 boys in the group. Result : we failed. A lot. ::erm::
[/slice of life]

Anyways, my appreciation generally depends a lot on the musical.

depends on the musical, i'm a HUGE fan of Jesuschrist Superstar spanish and english version, the music is really gorgeous (the Gethsemane part is extremely awesome!!!!!!). I love the Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables too. But i hate Grease (except for the Betty Rizzo performance), Rent and Cats as hell!

Yeah the ones I tend to like the most at the moment are Heathcliff and Rent, but I do like Les Miserables I just get way to picky on the cast for that one as i've heard too many bad casts for it.

I despise most musicals. The only ones I like are Grease, Phantom of the Opera and maybe Chicago.

I hate theatre kids. I worked at an art and music camp and they were everywhere. You know how in musicals everyone randomly burst into song? It was like that. Every day. It was horrible, especially when they would sing "numa numa". It would start out really low then get really loud and.. I'm scarred for life =(
