Of course, when I say about genre"chanson" I mean "chanson française", because usually everywhere is used the shortened version of this name - just "chanson".
And I'm absolutely sure that when Kaya says "chanson" he means "chanson française", because in his diary he describes it as music style, though I agree that not all songs on his album are belogs to "chanson française".

I've just listened to "Jacky" and "If you go away" by Marc Almond. Sorry, I am not convinced at all but I admid that It's not so often that I like remakes, especially of the artists that I love ^^

Sorry, it was the first time I heard it ^^ Maybe, because my mother tongue is french. Or maybe, because I am belgian. I really don't know. For me, even "Chanson française" is not the same of "Chanson française rive gauche" ^^ The mouvement "Chanson française" began in the 19th century, Aristide Bruand, Mistinguett, Maurice Chevalier ... It went in the beginning of the 20th century with Mireille, Charles Trenet, Mireille, Berthe Sylva, Edith Piaf ... But the "chanson française rive gauche" movement began after the second world war with Boris Vian, Jacques Brel, Georges Brassens, Barbara, Juliette Greco ...
I prefer speaking of movements than styles. Because all of these artists weren't of the same styles. There were engaged ones and others ... But they all sang in cabarets because it was the only way for them for being known. So you can imagine little place for the artists, little place to move and the only instrument they could use was a guitar. Only Leo Ferré and Barbara were accompagnied by a piano. But they had less cabarets to practice in.

Sorry to insist, but it's a period in Paris that I really love for personnal reasons ^^

I would love, Tiny (and all french scapeists), to read all that you have to talk about french music!
Please wirite a little more as soon as possible, I think everybody here is now interested! =D

I love some french music, but just the (pop)obvious! lol
Carla Bruni, Yann Tiersen, Pravda (<3), BB Brunes, Les Plastiscines, some Mylene Farmer musics, some Piaf ones...

Maybe is better create a new thread, right?

OMG K-kun! Sorry! I meant "K" as in "okay" so I totally wasn't singling you out

This seems to have become a convo on semantics, and I am fairly sure that the original topic has been lost.
But this was a good-to-know. Thank you Tiny.

All the artists you're mentioning are definitely not labelled "chanson française", except Edith Piaf of course. Yann Tiersen might qualify but I personally find his songs boring. La chanson française lasted from around 1900 until the middle 60's. It started with "la chanson réaliste", usually awful stories about mothers dying ("Les roses blanches") or doomed love stories or the loved one dying, well, the kind of song you better not listen to unless you've made sure you got a full box of Kleenex beside you, especially if your name is Tiny, ahahahah! *Désolée, Tiny, c'était facile, idiot et déloyal et je ne suis pas fière de moi!*

By the way, I have received and listened to Kaya's album and, believe it or not, I positively LOVE IT!!! As you know, I feared the worst, but the result is VERY good! He's got such a wonderful voice and did a great job of it. The only song I hardly recognized is "Je te veux" but it's not a very well-known song so it doesn't matter so much, and it's still quite good. I wish he would cover my 3 favourite songs by Charles Trenet ("Douce France", "Revoir Paris" and "La mer") because they would suit his kind of voice perfectly and they're such beautiful songs, probably among the best ever written in French. And I wish he'd come to France on July 14th (National Day) and sing his songs then. I think people would be at first surprised at them, then they'd ask for more, because he's really good! But please Kaya leave your pretty dress at the hotel and pretend you're a guy, otherwise some of those firemen will tear you to pieces, ahahahah! (I've got to explain that local dances are traditionally held outside fire stations that day and our firemen are not exactly famous for wearing dresses and pretty red hats!)

My intention was to say that I really don't know the 'chanson française', or another 'chanson genre'. I only know french pop or french rock music. Just the obvious ones, as I said. lol

OK. I'll do it later in the evening or night, or tomorrow (for me). Now, I am still busy with a work that I must absolutely finish for tomorrow. I don't know if a lot of people are interested. So, maybe, I'll write a little text and give it to you. And if you are interested by french music, maybe not only about the period of the "chanson française" but till now ^^

At least, thanks to me, Kleenex Will never go bankrupt ! :P Unless I forget them at my hotel every time

<_< Kaya's rendition of La Vie en Rose reminded me of the Grace Jones version! xD

I half expected Kaya to pull a William Shatner.

His rendition of "La vie en rose" certainly has much more to do with that of Grace Jones than with Edith Piaf's, and it's quite a good choice really!

You would be correct Decadent_Irises. The drawing of Kaya was actually a sticker that was put over the cover of the actual image of Kaya's face. It's great~

I also love the booklet, even though its about 8 pages long. Kaya and the cat are so cute ^o^
