Whats the name of your band?
Type of music you play? (sorry i know people hate this question)
Your instrument?

If not...

Do you want to be?

I'm not in a band, but I do lots of solo stuff.

I play keys and I can sing pretty well, but songwriting is my biggest strength.

I want a band, but I'm... picky, I guess. About genre.
I'm starting a music project with my brother, though. We're gonna find people to play with us, not always the same people, and basically just play for the fun of playing and see where it goes from there. I'm pretty excited about it, I'm tired of playing alone and being the only source of creativity. xD

Last time I was in a band was a terrible experience, though. None of the people in the band knew notes or chords, and therefore they couldn't tell me what they were playing. So, I had nothing to work with as far as trying to write a synth part that would go with what they were playing. I didn't know what notes would fit in the song because I didn't know what notes were in the song. Also, whenever we played, I couldn't hear what I was doing at all because the guitarist refused to turn down his amp even though it was way too loud, no matter how many times I asked. And then everyone got mad at me when I skipped practice, but the environment for practice for me was so bad, and when I actually when I literally was just sitting there listening to them play the whole time. If I did play anything, the guitarist would shoot me a look like "That sounds like crap". And of course, it probably did, because I couldn't even hear myself playing. D<

Kazoos are fucking awesome. :|
Seriously, I'd actually use one in a song if I owned one.

edit: This song features some Kazoo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMLyACxay3E

::squee:: CocoRosie uses Kazoos in a some others, too.

As for me I don't play anything but I've always wanted to be the guy that did the designing for CDs and flyers. When I was in college, most of my projects I did a lot of flyers and CD designs. I have done anything graphic design related in almost two years now, so I don't know how far I could go with it now. Need to practice and relearn everything I forgot D: D:

When I was 12, me and my two best friends decided we were going to start an all-girl band. (A thrash metal band, of course. It was 1988.)

None of us played any instruments yet so we had to assign roles. It was decided that I would be the vocalist because my singing was at least passable. The other two decided who would be the drummer and who would be the guitarist (we figured we'd worry about finding a bassist later).

My friends were supposed to con their parents into getting them instruments and lessons but we started writing lyrics and coming up with melodies before we even had instruments. We "wrote" about 5 songs and would sing them to anyone who would listen.

The drummer never managed to get a drum set but the guitarist actually became a really good acoustic player long after we gave up on the idea of our "band."

The name of our band was SVM - which was an homage to bands we loved like SOD, MOD and DRI. It stood for Sinful Voodoo Masters, which, trust me, was meant to be stupid. We grafittied "SVM" all over town.

Inspired by Burzum, I have a one man band called Ghost of an Ideal Wife (from the Laughing Clowns album). I do guitars and other strings, vocals, keys, percussion and saxophone. I made some recordings more than a year ago which can be found here www.myspace.com/ghostofanidealwife
I really do want to get in a band though. The style of music I want to play changes depending on what I'm listening to. eg These Immortal Souls - deathrock; Megadeth - thrash metal; Mayhem, Darkthrone, Sigh - black metal; Malice Mizer, Iron Maiden, Sonic Youth - two guitars. Right now I'm listening to stuff on the Japanese label PSF Records. This means I want to do dark psychedelic rock like Fushitsusha, Shizuka, High Rise, Kousokuya.

Wait--is this real? XD

@Iska: That's so awesome! When I was twelve... I think I was playing Pokemon? ::meev:: Way cool.

@Amatsu: Good luck with your new project! Hope it goes better than the last one ::bleh::

@Haus: That's cool that you're recording and making your own songs. How long have you been playing?

For me, I mostly have raw, general musical skills, somehow ::meev:: I know all you need to know about scales and chords and stuff, I have a good ear, my fingers are well-coordinated from playing the piano for years. The only instrument I play regularly anymore is my guitar, but I've only had it for a few years and never played in a band, so I'm still looking for opportunities to "woodshed" with other people. I could really be a great pianist if I wanted to, but I've realized that I'm not satisfied with: Get sheet music, read sheet music, play sheet music , so I've gradually abandoned it. I'm considering returning to it and taking a more natural, improv approach without sheet music, I just don't know where to start (well, I have an idea. I think I'm going to try to learn Paparazzi or Poker Face on the piano XD). I think the guitar will be my mainstay, though. (Maybe I'll try to translate GaGa to the guitar too XD)

I'm definitely looking to jam with other musicians. I'd play anything. With anyone. I'm mostly looking to woodshed my guitar and performance abilities, and then I think I'm going to declare a Music Major *gasp!* and get involved at University. Mostly just to hone my technical skills and get comfortable playing in front anyone, anywhere.

I play bass and sing in a band called Chemical Pictures; we're a bluesy jazzy old-emo hard rock band, influenced by Jelly, Yellow Monkey and Michelle Gun Elephants, but we play in the visual scene.

I have my own band called SyuniKiss (you'll never guess where i got the name from. lol)
I play guitar, keyboards, and bass. I am the main composer because I am just a really good songwriter. :)
I am also very good at guitar. ::k::
My best friend is the Vocalist and keyboardist.
We have an amazing bassist who also plays cello and guitar.
And our drummer who also sings, but doesn't know much at all about music.
We play Jrock and classical influenced music. I take a lot of influence from 80's metal too (nobody seems to like tapping as much as i do), but mostly Jrock.
Mana and Hizaki are my idols.
We are all currently majoring in music and go to the same college, except the drummer. (The best place to meet great musicians, i think).
The hardest thing is trying to get a good demo recorded. We had one but I deleted it because it was bad. We have also only done a few perfromances, which were all pretty good. We just dont always get to practice a lot and sometimes we have become like a metal jam band. lol Most of my guitar solos are improv too, which i need to fix.
But we are still a really good band. :D

Thanks... or are you talking about Boris?

I've been playing guitar for four years, I had a year's worth of singing lessons awhile ago, I've been doing piano for about two years. Those recordings are from over a year ago... it's weird listening to them now. You can clearly see that I wasn't interested in patiently recording until I got a perfect take, listen to the bit at the end of "Piano in C#minor" where I hit a wrong note and it sounds so out of place. Or how all the songs are lo-fi in a bad way.

Thanks Rosiel, this thread's inspired me to make (and more importantly, record) some more music. And also form a band.

I was in a band as a vocalist that involved connections with GPK and other means of unnecessary marks. Sadly I had left the band without say when jealousy came into play with the leader. Found out that the jealousy was connected with him wanting to be vocalist and guitarist after post searching for a singer. We were to go on tour should this crap not happened. I am still restoring the $900 out that I had lost during the band.
