It's a review I whipped up while listening to each song. It's nothing spectacular in terms of a review, but I felt I should give it my play-by-play. Here we go.

1.) Misty - A very nice piano/violin ballad. Very beautiful intro. It kind of makes me wonder where the album will be headed in terms of direction. The violin in this song is especially gorgeous. The end fades out with some guitar and a beat and onto..

2.) Farewell - This song already has a great sound to it. It rocks hard from the moment it starts. The music cuts out and Gackt's vocals start (a typical thing in a Gackt song). The album already seem to have a mysterious, dark feel. I really like the rhythm of the bridge vocals, as well as the chorus. Seems that Gackt always knows how to make a nice dramatic chorus. I've noticed so far that he's not going too strong on the vibrato, which isn't a bad thing. There's some very cool drums in the backround of the second verse, adding to that dramatic feel. A small guitar solo comes in and then band kicks it up a bit for a heavy rock out session but it's pretty short. I would've liked to hear that carry out. One more chorus and the song comes to a close.

3.) noesis - I loved this track as a b-side, so I have no problem with it being on the album. It easily became one of my favorite Gackt songs once I heard it. I love how it's got that industrial feel to it. It, to me, is an absolutely wonderful song and one of Gackt's best. The album version is actually different from the single version with some added synth in the bridge. I'm very fond of the verse vocals and how they're distorted. I'd really love to see noesis live. It's also come to my attention that so far, this album seems to be pretty dark. Very fitting as a continuation to MOON. The instrumental part towards the end of the song is wonderful, especially when it breaks into the orchestral part.

4.) ASH - Ash was another b-side that I liked. It reminded me of bird cage in the way that it was a pretty calm-ish ballad, and then breaks into a heavier rock song. It's a relatively simple song. Really nothing crazy about the song to rant and rave over besides it being a pretty song. I remember the lyrics being kind of sad, but Gackt is the master of depressing lyrics. The only part I really find to be "awesome" is after the instrumental in the middle, the rest is pretty mediocre compared to Farewell and noesis.

5.) Metamorphoze - This song was, I thought, the weakest of the three singles Gackt released for DIABOLOS. The PV was cool though. Everyone likes some Gundam action. Another pretty basic rock song for Gackt, but I think it's good that the singles aren't as epic and dramatic as the material on the album. It leaves room for him to do much more things on the album. Again, there's nothing much to this song really except for a nice chorus and some nice drums/guitar.

6.) Dispar - This song is all.. got cool beats in the beginning and seems like it's going to be synthy. Then some AWESOME guitars break in and this might just be my new favorite Gackt song. The rhythm he sings in for the verses is great. The bassline is especially impressive. The chorus is really catchy and this song is pretty damn different for Gackt. I'd say it's along the lines of.. a futuristic Papa lapped a pap lopped except without horns. It has that rhythm and dancey feel that Papa lapped a pap lopped had, which is why I relate Dispar to it. Although the song is short, it's simple and to the point. So far, my favorite song on the album.

7.) Future - Acoustic guitar starts up this song, and makes you think "here comes a ballad", and you'd be right about that with the violin kicking in. From the title, I expected another song like Dispar or something, with that cyber rock feel. There is a few elements that make thing "futuristic" in the song though. The beat comes in after the first verse and it's got a nice melody to it. Following the trend of Gackt songs we jump back into the verse, repeat chorus and then there's.. sounds of like a war, people dying, and when combining that with the title I assume it's about a war in the future, or the future AFTER a war. One more chorus, a violin outro and we jump into the very different BLACK STONE.

8.) BLACK STONE - Well, this is a kick in the other direction. I'm sure Gackt fans have met BLACK STONE by now. It was probably my favorite of the three singles. Upbeat, rocky, fun. It has that ANOTHER WORLD vibe but doesn't sound like it. Every Gackt album needs one of these songs. Great to switch things up on a, so far, dark album. One thing I really love about BLACK STONE is its guitar solo and following chorus variation. Hearing BLACK STONE again after so long also furthers my interest in a tour for this album. I think I'll surely be investing in the DVD when it comes out.

9.) Storm - Some backmasking and rockish feel open this song up. Some synth and a pop kind of beat back up the verses and honestly, it sounds like something recent from Ayumi Hamasaki in terms of music (yes, she does heavy rock now, and does it well mind you). The chorus is pretty heavy rocking along the lines of Farewell. It's late in the album now though, and I feel that the album, so far is missing something. Some guitar solo, heavy rocking riffs, awesome drums and piano follow and lead back into a final chorus.

10.) ROAD - This song almost sounds L'arc~en~Ciel-ish. Usually Gackt's albums take a depressing, sad turn by now, but it's another upbeat pop-rock song. Less punky than BLACK STONE, this song still carries itself well. I can see Gackt fans really liking this song. ROAD also has a different feel for Gackt, although I can't put my finger on what it is. The chorus is rather bouncy (not in a U+K bouncy way. More of a "jump up and down" way) and is the hook of the song. A tiny guitar solo and some harmony from Gackt and in pops in some orchestral elements followed by some great drum rolls. This song is also getting my seal of approval as one of my favorites of the album.

11.) Todokanai Ai to Shitteita no ni Osae Kirezu ni Aishitsuzuketa... - I hate how long this song name is. Anyway, I liked this single alot, especially the PV. It's a very beautiful song, but I wish Gackt hadn't ended the album with a single song. This adds to the feeling of something missing on DIABOLOS. At least the song is a likeable one. I would have hated an ending with Metamorphoze o__O. In a way, ending with this single is like knowing the end to a story before even reading the book. I think people will get what I'm trying to say there. There's nothing really different from the single version but it still is a beautiful song to close an album with.

Overall, I'd have to say my favorite songs are Farewell, noesis, Dispar and BLACK STONE. Gackt needs to take more time out and make his albums longer. I don't feel that, as a sequal to MOON, DIABOLOS did justice to MOON. Some tracks were quite on par with MOON while others just seemed to lack in that epic feel MOON had. In all though, it's still a good album. Not his best, but better than Crescent by a bit.

I need more time until i have a really good opinion about this album. I am still listening to it for the second time. it is not bad, though. I have to agree with something Kazuo said : ROAD sounds VERY l'arc-ish, indeed.

I love this album. It´s really great, but i think it was a bit short.Maybe it´s because all of his b-sides were on this album?Hm,but i really like all songs on it.My favourite tracks are Misty,Ash,Dispar,Future and Road. And Road reminds me more on Pierrot (Cocoon,Haruka etc.) than Lárc en ciel ^^"

But it´s a really great cd.=)

First listen thoughts:

The opener's very pretty; not my favorite Gackt album opener but way better than "4th", at any rate (which is probably his worst opener).
"Farewell" isn't a bad song, and it's got some interesting moments, but it's not the strongest opening song either. It just kind of doesn't snag me, although the chorus is memorable enough. And while I really like "noesis" and "ash", having the next 3 songs in a row as songs I already know made me go downstairs and brew some tea. "Metamorphoze" is filler. I know it was a single, I know it's a Gundam theme, but on the album it's filler.
"Dispar", on the other hand, kicked me in the face. The intro pads the song a little much and could have been cut in half, maybe, but what great guitar bits. Really driving. Mucho dig...o. Similarly, when "Future" finally gets into its groove, it reminds me of "Fragrance" on "Moon", which is a song I adored. A little bit like the beginning of "ash", as well. "Black Stone" is like the non-crappy "Another World", and I think we can all agree that's a good thing. "Storm" also rocks, and I like that; good synth effects. "Road" does sound like L'arc, and what's to dislike about that?
Closing with the single DOES seem a little "eh" on this album, but it's still an above-average, solid release.

I'm just seriously puzzled about how he
(especially on tape) now sounds like he had a constant flu. His voice is so affected. I know it's been that way for a good while now (if you want an approximation in my ears, progressively more since Crescent). I'm just asking what you think - there might have been hefty discussion over this and I've just missed it, but I'm just wondering if it's just me who is puzzled about this:

Is he doing it on purpose, or is it the smoking, or, from a more technical point of view, why is he being mic'd so closely now?

A good example of a very similar progression of voice like this springs to mind - David Sylvian. It's not that his voice has grown that much deeper over the years, but the methods used to capturing his voice on tape have, and I don't necessarily like it.

Mortis: I thought his voice was extremely consistent up until the moment he released "Kimi ni Aitakute". The affectation has backed up considerably on Diabolos, I believe, but the entirety of Love Letter was in that weird tone he'd taken up.

i think it is just that he wants to sing this way now; it is good to have a change once in a while. And i don't have issues with this new style of his, i enjoy it as much as his old one.

Although you're probably right about the slightly reduced affectation (and we seem to agree on the starting "point" of his change in his use of voice), I can only start to speculate how songs like "Road" could be like if he was singing as crystal-clearly as he did two or three years ago. I think the parallel between, say, "Mizerable" and "Road" musically would be much more obvious if they were sang by the same person :D

I'm not essentially criticizing here as much as I am just voicing my opinion. Just can't help thinking about it. I hope nobody minds.

I like despair allot.

But there's nothing about this song that makes gackt sound like he's in despair. Nor do I feel despaired when I listen to it.

In face, it makes me wanna play DDR...

Does anyone think that his voice deepened because of his addiction to cigarettes? Just a thought..it doesn't sound like it was an intentional change.
But, to the point. Kazuo I liked your review and I agree with alot of it.

Actually, Ash is a little different than the single version too. Same music and everything but he adds in a pretty good bit of harmonizing parts.

One thing I noticed about this album is that he does alot of faster talking stuff, like in Future. Its not what I expected at all. I LOVE the music to every song. The fast style singing in some parts I am getting used to, like in Future, but the songs are all top notch.

Farewell is an awesome song. Definately great. Misty is a good opening. I like it better than Noah and 4th, nothing will beat Ares as an opening though.

Noesis, Ash, Metamorphoze and Black Stone are all hear dbefore and I've voice my opinions on them. My least favorite of those four is either Noesis or Black Stone, and then I either like Metamorphoze or Ash the best of the four.

I agree with the starter of the thread as well, Dispar is a papa lapped a pap lopped. Its that style but a little more serious/heavier and more futuristic. Which is ironic cause the next song I want to talk about is Future.

Its kind of like Fragrance. Its that style kind of but very slightly more up tempo, and has some massively great violin parts. It has the fast style vocals as I was talking about which is a little weird for Gackt, but its growing on me. Also, its weird how you can hear explosions and monstrous screams in the break in the song, like there is a war going on? Wasnt there something said about the Darts storyline being somewhat warlike?

Storm sounds pretty cool as well. A rock type song, with that Gackt flair. It kinda sounds a little linkin parkish, like Hybrid Theory linkin park, with the mixing with the turn tables and electronic parts. Its a good song.

And once again, I agree with the thread starter. I thought the same thing that Road sounded like something L'arc en Ciel would do. It has that sort of feel to it. Its an up beat song, not really fast but more of a feeling good type song. Once again, its a pretty good song.

And of course Todokanai, which is a good song itself.

Overall, Im pleased with the cd. Im not blown away, but Im definately not dissapointed. Pretty much every song is a solid song. My favorite song though is probably Farewell on the album. That is the song that made me saw awesome. The others I all though were good but, nothing to make me jump from my seat, like some of the Moon songs did such as Doomsday, Deathwish, and Rain did. I think I will end up liking this cd better than Rebirth though.

About his voice, it does sound deeper. It could either be from smoking, or cause he has said it is harder for him to do rock songs now, which you can tell from the mirror performances, especially compared to when he first did mirror in the Mars tour, which sounded amazing. It could be because of aging and smoking. If its from smoking, he can really only blame himself, but yeah Im not going into it.

Overall, good cd - 8/10

Road is the only song on the album that really stands out for me. I've listened to the entire thing SEVERAL times, and I DO enjoy other songs. Like Misty, Farewell, Dispar... and the singles Black Stone, Metamorphoze and the b-side Ash.

But really, Road is the only thing that seems "new" to me. I can't quite place my finger on which song it reminds me of... But I DEFINETLY get the image of song by L'Arc en Ciel or Hyde... I wish I could figure out which song it reminds me of, exactly, but it's so... so... UN-Gackt. And I think his current singing style works really well for this song.

You know, you have to realize that Gackt is getting older, and his voice is bound to change a bit. Also, he DOES smoke and drink... that's got to have some kind of an effect. So maybe this way of singing is easier for him. Pr maybe he just LIKES it. Or maybe he got some kind of voice-coach behind the scenes messing with his style by teaching him all sorts of new ways to "breathe." Who knows. It's a little more nasal... and more even. I don't mind it all.

Overall this is good album by Gackt. I just wish it was more like Mars or Crescent... Diablos is a SOLID album of GOOD music. But it's kind of... boring. I enjoyed the times when I mistook Gackt's singing voice for that of a mysterious woman, and when you just didn't know WHAT to expect on the next track, because he experimented with all sorts of ballads, rock tunes, pop tunes...

Ah well.

Well, I'm not going to complain that half of the album is off the singles. Crescent was no different, and while in the heyday of Rebirth only 3 songs were from singles, I think there was more filler. Every track off of Diabolos is solid and great. I enjoyed every one of the the single tracks (Black Stone, Metamorphoze, Todokanai blahblah) more than any Gackt singles in recent memory.

I had never listened to Noesis before the album either so that was a pleasant surprise going in. Ash, a track I never cared much for before, has grown on me immensely within the context of the album. The opening is very pretty, and Farewell is a strong if not a bit boring Gackt track. I just think it doesn't tread much new ground. The same can't be said for Dispar however...which is definitely one of my favorite Gackt songs ever. I love how he'll just pull something experimental and cool like this out of nowhere. Future is amazing. It's sooo pretty...alternating between the quiet atmospheric sections and the dance-beat chorus. It recalls something like Moon the most to me. Storm has like...a REALLY poppy sound to the beginning. It rocks pretty hard but is nothing to write home about IMO. Then we get Road, and I agree it sounds very non-Gackt-ish, yet I don't see a huge L'arc resemblance. I still can't quite place what it reminds me of but...it's something. XD It is very "jump up and down" and I think would be great fun live. Ending with a single...eh, he did it on Rebirth and that's still my favorite Gackt album. ;) And it helps I really like the song.

I'd have to say my favorite new songs are Dispar and Future, with Black Stone my favorite of the single tracks. I agree with the people saying it's "the non-sucky version of Another World." Normally I don't care for Gackt's upbeat rock tracks, but he really got it right with this one. I never get tired of it and it's really uplifting. ^^

I like Diabolos, I really do. And yet I agree with those who say something is missing. Perhaps it's just not cohesive enough...or long enough. Or there's just not enough to get excited about. I'd place it square in the middle of my Gackt album rankings. I'm just glad he's out of his remake/love ballad phase. *whew* Gackt is much more interesting writing songs like these.
