This is probably a really dumb question but how do I upload a profile picture for this account? I go to the Profile board thing and it asks me to link an avatar but I don't know what to do then? Thanks in advance

Upload the image to something like imgur and then copy/paste the url into that field.

Yeah, you have to find your own hosting for your avatar, you can't upload directly to the forum.
